The definition of the acronym esports: E: electronic M: sports S: games. E play video games against other players online. It’s known as professional gaming, and people make a living out of it by playing, commentating or streaming their games live.
The industry- Until recently, esports was an industry that prospered in Asia, and it is now slowly moving towards Europe and North America. League of Legends (LOL), Defence of the Ancients (DOTA) and Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) are some of the most popular games when it comes to professional gaming.
What is LOL Esports?
The company- LOL ESports is the biggest league for League of Legends, with about 100 million active players worldwide. While Riot Games developed it, its co-operation with Chinese internet company Tencent Holdings Limited led to its huge popularity in Asia. However, LOL ESports is not well known in North America and Europe.
What are the benefits of playing LOL Esports for a living?
It can be financially rewarding. The highest-paid LOL player earned $1,494,707 in 2015, while the lowest players earned $6,650. That’s a big difference compared to other sports like Tennis, where the top players earn around $40 million while the lowest tennis players get about $300 thousand each year.
The players can interact with fans and form a very strong community of supporters that cheer for them and support the scene. Also, the players don’t need to go to school or university, and they can just focus on playing games for a living which is also something many Koreans do.

China’s Tencent Holdings Limited bought a majority stake in Riot Games. As you know, League of Legends is mainly popular in Asia, especially China, where there are millions of players daily. This could help the game go mainstream in the future, and there should be many more chances to see LOL ESports tournaments on TV.
Few facts about LOL Esports Championships:-
There are also efforts to make LOL Esports an Olympic sport like shooting, archery, weightlifting etc. However, it won’t happen anytime soon because eSports is not well known enough yet compared to these sports that have been around for centuries.
The LOL World Championships for 2015 had a prize pool of 2 million dollars, and more than 20 teams took part in it from all around the world. LOL Esports was held at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, where NBA basketball games take place. This shows how popular LOL ESports has become and how it’s slowly going mainstream.
The next LOL World Championship will be held in Europe, but no specific city has been decided yet, so that means it could be coming to a city near you soon!

The future of LOL Esports looks very promising, and I am sure the number of people watching it will increase over time, especially as more LOL Esports tournaments become televised on TV. It has a huge following of millions of people who watch it daily and enjoy it a lot, which is not bad for a game that’s been around for less than 10 years. I am sure that more TV channels will start broadcasting LOL ESports tournaments in the future, and I hope they do because it’s a lot of fun watching the best players in the world battle each other for huge prize money.
